People in London were in for a surprise on Wednesday after 29 tonnes of carrots was dumped on a street. Yes, you read that right. Netizens took to social media to post pictures and videos of the incident inquiring about why 29,000 kg of carrots was being dumped by a lorry in front of the Goldsmiths College in south London.

Take a look at the video posted by a Twitter user:

The video shows carrots lying in a pile on the road as onlookers watched the whole scene. After several Twitter users flooded the internet asking why carrots were being dumped on the road, Goldsmiths College intervened to reveal the mystery.

Goldsmiths responded to one of the tweets and explained that the carrots were part of an art installation by a student. The college revealed that the installation is a part of the college’s MFA degree show. They wrote, "It is an installation called 'Grounding' by the artist and MFA student Rafael Perez Evans."

A statement from Rafael Perez Evans further revealed that "produce in the piece are unwanted carrots, carrots that the food industry in the UK deems not worthy of shelves." The artwork explores "the tensions in visibility between the rural and the city" and was inspired by European farmers dumping their devalued produce as a form of protest.

According to Sky News, the carrots will be removed after the exhibition and donated to farm animals. However, since its installation many students have climbed on the artwork and taken carrots home to eat.
