  • Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi have been released by the UP police. They are now headed back towards Delhi escorted by the UP police, sources said.

  • Protest marches were taken out at many places in Haryana against the gangrape in Uttar Pradesh's Hathras, with some demonstrators demanding capital punishment for the culprits. The protests were organised by various social outfits and Dalit organisations on Thursday at several places including Kaithal, Yamunanagar, Fatehabad and Rohtak. At Bahadurgarh, the protesters burnt an effigy of the Uttar Pradesh government and raised slogans against the BJP led regime for its alleged failure to manage law and order.

  • Raising questions over the law and order situation in Uttar Pradesh, BSP chief Mayawati demanded that either the state's chief minister be replaced or the President's rule imposed. Referring to deaths of two women in

    Hathras

and Balrampur regions of the state, she said the incidents are reminiscent of the 2012 Nirbhaya gang rape and murder in Delhi.

  • Hitting out at the BJP government in Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee said that as Goddess Sita had to go through 'Agni Pariksha', the dalit woman was put on a funeral pyre in the dead of the night. "Once Goddess Sita had to go through 'Agni Pariksha' (test by fire). Now in UP, the woman was raped, and later her body was put on a funeral pyre," Banerjee said.

  • The forensic report of the

    Hathras

victim shows that the woman was not raped, Uttar Pradesh Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) Prashant Kumar said. "The forensic science laboratory report clearly says that sperm was not found in the samples collected from the woman... The report has made it clear that the woman was not raped," Kumar said in a press conference.

  • Rahul Gandhi along with Priyanka Gandhi Vadra were detained by the Uttar Pradesh police while they were on way to Hathras. Earlier, Rahul was pushed in the melee and fell on the ground as the police stopped him march on the expressway.

  • Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra started a foot march to Uttar Pradesh's Hathras after her vehicle was stopped by the authorities along Yamuna Expressway on Thursday. UP CM must take responsibility for the safety of women and ensure atrocities against them are stopped, said Priyanka Gandhi. "Around the same time last year, we were fighting for the Unnao daughter, the situation in UP has not changed in a year," said Priyanka.

  • Just now police pushed me, lathi-charged me and threw me to the ground. I want to ask, can only Modi Ji walk in this country? Can't a normal person walk? Our vehicle was stopped, so we started walking, said Rahul Gandhi.

  • The borders of Hathras have been sealed and Section 144 of CrPC has been imposed in the district. More than five people are not allowed to gather in Hathras, even media is not be allowed.

  • The medical report from the Aligarh Muslim University Medical College mentions that there were injuries but it does not confirm forced sexual intercourse. They're waiting for a report of the forensics. As of now, doctors say that they're not confirming rape, said Superintendent of Police (SP) Vikrant Vir on Thursday.

  • The SP added that the Special Investigation Team (SIT), formed by chief minister Yogi Adityanath, visited the village and met the victim's family on Wednesday. "The three-member team inspected the crime spot. The investigation is on," the Hathras SP said.

  • The Uttar Pradesh government had announced on Wednesday that the kin will be given Rs 25 lakh as ex-gratia, a house, and a government job for one of the family members. The government has said the matter will be heard in a fast-track court. CM Adityanath also spoke to the family of the victim through videoconferencing.

  • The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognisance of the

    Hathras gangrape case

and has sent notices to the chief secretary of the state government and the Director-General of Police (DGP) of Uttar Pradesh. The commission said the responses from the state authorities are expected within four weeks.

  • The NHRC observed, "It is apparent that the police was not able to take timely action to trace and save the victim...Not only this, but there are also allegations made by the family that the "police forcibly took away the body of the deceased for cremation." Many such incidents have occurred in the state of Uttar Pradesh where the members of the Scheduled Community have been subjected to discrimination and harassment by the people belonging to upper castes," said the NHRC.

  • A plea was moved in the Supreme Court seeking directions for handing over to the CBI or a Special Investigation Team the case of the brutal gang-rape and death of the woman. The plea filed by a social activist Satyama Dubey sought transfer of the probe to the CBI or SIT under the sitting or retired judge of the top court or the high court.

  • Have no word to condemn the barbaric and shameful incident, said West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday referring to the Hathras gangrape. "More shameful is the forceful cremation without the family's presence or consent, exposing those who use slogans & lofty promises for votes," she added.

  • The Congress on Wednesday protested statewide with Rahul Gandhi dubbing the "forcible cremation" of the Hathras gang-rape victim by the police as a "shameful" move of the Uttar Pradesh government. "It is a shameful move of the state government to oppress the Dalits and show them their place in society," he tweeted in Hindi, tagging a news report on the cremation of the 19-year-old woman.

  • The Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) has written to Chief Justice of India SA Bobde and other judges of the Supreme Court urging them to take cognisance of the gang-rape and murder of a Dalit girl in Uttar Pradesh's Hathras district. The Chief of DCW, Swati Maliwal, has requested the court to call for a High Court-monitored investigation into the case to ensure "strictest and swiftest" possible punishment to the accused.

  • Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Wednesday attacked the Yogi Adityanath government over the death of Hathras gangrape victim, saying she "did not die but was murdered by ruthless government" and "her body was consigned to flames forcibly".

Hathras gangrape case

A 19-year-old Dalit woman was raped in Hathras by four men on September 14. The young woman had gone to the fields with her mother and went missing soon after. She was found later, beaten and tortured, her tongue cut as she bit it when the accused attempted to strangle her. She was first admitted to Aligarh Muslim University's Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College and Hospital and then shifted to Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi on Monday where she died on Tuesday. On Wednesday, her body was cremated in the wee hours in her native village amid tight security. The victim's family alleged that the Police and officials rushed the cremation and did not allow them wait for all their relatives to arrive, which sparked further outrage at administration's conduct.

The accused, who had allegedly tried to strangle her to death as she resisted their rape attempt, have been arrested.

Balrampur rape case

A 22-year-old Dalit woman died after being allegedly sexually assaulted by two youth in the Gaisri police station area of Balrampur. Both the accused, Shahid and Sahil, have been arrested. The Gaisri police station was informed by the the kin of the woman that she worked at a private firm and on Tuesday she did not return till late night. Later in the wee hours of Wednesday the girl came on a rickshaw in a bad condition with glucose drip attached to her arms. She was soon rushed to a hospital but died on the way.

Family members alleged sexual assault by two men who have been arrested. Balrampur police said the allegations will be examined by a medical expert.
